The city of Tshwane hosted the Under 23, Elite and Veterans 2019 SA National Road Cycling Championships and it was an incredible 4 days of racing!

The event started out with the Individual Time Trial on Thursday and Friday and rolled onto the Road Race which was on Saturday and Sunday.

Liezel Jordaan (Customized Cycling- BioPlus) took this years overall ladies Time Trial title and Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-SCOTT) managed to secure his 8th consecutive Time Trial title showing his class in this discipline.

In the ladies Road Race, we saw Ashleigh Moolman Pasio (team CCC-LIV) claiming the overall title after a very exciting race. Special mention must go to Juanita De Vaal (Sandton City- Cycle Nation) who put on a gutsy display managing to hang onto 2nd overall after being in a solo breakaway for over 100kms. Tiffany Keep took the under 23 title and finished 4th overall in the Elite Ladies.

Daryl Impey showed pure class in the mens Road Race. For the second year in a row, he claimed both the Time Trial and Road Race titles. On the last ascent of Tom Jenkins drive, Impey put in a huge attack to bring solo rider Nic Dlamini (Team Dimension Data) back from an earlier move off the front. Once Impey had caught Dlamini, he surged once again and opened up a gap which he held all the way to the finish line with the SA crowd welcoming him home.

Check out the video of Daryl’s final attack up Tom Jenkins Drive. Ryan Gibbons (Team Di-Data) and Stephan De Bod (Team Di-Data) rounded off the Men’s Elite podium in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Marc Pritzen (Office Guru Racing Under23) took the under 23 title after a solid ride.

The crowd on the day was electrifying and no doubt the riders put on an exciting display for the spectators. Cycling is a spectator sport and it showed that when race organisers bring the races to the people an amazing atmosphere can be created for the riders and the event.

A special mention and, in my opinion the spectator of the day, goes to the famous Aero-man. This man has a passion and pure love for cycling. He dressed up as a superhero cycling fan and came to support the SA Champs Road Race. He usually races himself, and in his own right he is a very powerful rider, but unfortunately being an American living in South Africa, he was not able to compete in our National Champs.

A massive shout out to StreamIt 360 for the amazing coverage of the event – it kept everyone on their toes being able to watch the event live. We only wish we could get this type of coverage at more events more often.
